Dusk Events, written for Jack Quartet, highlights my fascination with the translation of one discrete sonic medium into another. (In the case of this piece, the non-acoustic source material was more amphibious than digital—it was largely inspired by a field recording of chirping frogs.) The string quartet approximates field-recorded harmonics by using extended techniques like microtonal tuning. The result is not imitation but a kind of porous overlap, where one medium slips into another.
